Answer:

Bacteria is everywhere! These small creatures survive in every condition on earth and we have even found bacteria capable of surviving the radiation and vacuum of space. These were most likely the first forms of life on earth and it is highly likely they will be the last organism left on this planet when all is said and done. That being said, bacteria have had plenty of time to grow and adapt to their environment and are doing what every other creature on this planet is programmed for, to reproduce and survive. Most bacteria are not pathogenic. Even bacteria that sound scary due to diseases associated with the strain usually have a harmless wild type as well. Many bacteria are necessary for food digestion, gut maturation, and a plethora of other functions. Without bacteria, the mitochondria may not be an available feature to eukaryotic cells (endosymbiotic theory). It is easy to see the harm these creatures do but the benefits of prokaryotic life outweigh the costs immensely. Read into germ free mice studies and the human microbiome and you will understand how crucial and vital these creatures are to survival. They also may be the key to a lot of cutting edge research here soon!
