Plants need nitrogen for making proteins, chlorophyll and many others. Although there is huge amount of nitrogen, plants cannot take them directly.
So bacteria such as rhizobium and blue green algae converts nitrogen into nitrogenous substances so that plants can take them and mix them with soil. And in this way they increases soil fertility by N2 fixation
