\underline{\underline{\sf Bacteriophage - }}

  • Virus infected bacteria are known as Bacteriophages.

  • A typical bacteriophage consists of a polyhedral head, collar piece, neck and six tail fibers.

  • The tail ranging from end of neck to the tail fibers is covered by a sheath.

  • Bacteriophages generally have a double stranded circular or linear DNA housed in the head.

  • The nucleic acids are protected by a proteinaceous covering called capsid.

  • On the basis of reproduction, there are two kinds of bacteriophage - Phagic Bacteriophage & Pinocytic Bacteriophage.

  • In a Phagic Bacteriophage, only the genetic material enters the host organism while the whole of pinocytic bacteriophage enters the host organism except the envelope.

Example, T-4 Bacteriophage
