Originally, Siddhartha Gautam Buddha, was a brahmin by the name of Sumedha during the days of the first Buddha, named as Dipankar Buddha. He lived in the city of Amaravati, and had crores of Rupees. and property. He had learned all the three vedas. He was blessed by the first Buddha, Dipankar, that he will also become a Buddha later on.
Gautam Buddha was the 25th Buddha, and he was a Bodhisatwa in the time of previous 24 Buddhas, and was mostly a brahmin in these 24 births, except a few cases, where he was born as a Kshatriya, and once as a lion. He was blessed by all the previous 24 Buddhas, that he will become a Buddha.
He was living in the “Tushit loka”, a heaven, when the Gods of all the directions, the “Lokpal” declared that a Buddha will be born in the world after 1000 years. This is known as “Buddha Kolahala”. So, he was prepared to come as a Buddha, a millennium before the birth.
After hearing this proclamation, the Gods, ( Chaturmaharaj, Indra, Suyaam, Santushita, Sunirmita, Vashavarti and Mahabrahma) came to the would be Buddha to pray thus:- O, friend, you have attained the penances of ten “Paaarmita”, neither to ascend the throne of Indra, nor to get the post of Brahma, or Maar, but only for the welfare of the world and the Gods. Now is the time to descend to the world, and get born from the womb of the mother. So, please ascend to the post of Buddha, along with the God. ( Buddha vamsa 1–66 to 68).
After that Buddha pondered over the time, place, the clan and the mother to whom will he be born. Then he descended to this world.
This is stated on the basis of the “Avi doore Nidaan Katha”, part of the Jatak Attha Katha.
If the stay of Buddha in the heaven is not considered as the last birth, then Buddha was born as a Brahmin student ( Maanavak), by the name of Jyotipal, and was learned in all the three vedas, astrology, history, religion, geography and the study of astronomy. This was during the days of 24th Buddha, by the name of Kashyapa Buddha. ( Buddha vamsa 24–10 to 31).
