he was seen as the last mughal ruler as the British declared that his descendants would not be callled kings. they would be just called prince.when the revolt of 1857 started the sepoys forced him to be as their leader and to lead the rebellion. he was old and powerless but also he was declared naturally as a leader

there ate many reason behind declairing bahadur shah zaffar as leader they are
1) bahadur shahzaffar was most expeirenced among them
2)mugals have strong reputation for there huge army
3) mughal's have more wealth than any other ruler that time who can phase war endeminity
4) it would be easy for such a wealther king to unit the smaller ones
so the early rebles have decided yo make bahadur shah zaffar as their leader .
