Kekeruhan air didasarkan pada jumlah cahaya yang tersebar oleh partikel-partikel di dalam air.
Kekeruhan dapat berasal dari endapan tersuspensi seperti lumpur atau tanah liat, bahan anorganik, atau bahan organik seperti ganggang, plankton dan bahan peluruhan.
Selain zat padat tersuspensi ini, kekeruhan juga dapat mencakup bahan organik terlarut berwarna (CDOM), bahan organik terlarut berfluoresensi (FDOM) dan pewarna lainnya.
Artificial chemical Aluminium sulfate is extensively applied as a flocculant in water treatment plants for the removal of turbidity in water. It is also abundant in developing countries, and are available in the market in naturally occurring mineral blocks of soft white stone, and commonly called ‘alum’.
There are various methods to use alum as a flocculant, which includes crushing it into powder form before adding it to water, subsequently by stirring, and decanting; or, stirring by adding the whole sulfate stone in the turbid water for a few seconds and waiting for the solids to settle at the bottom. Clearwater from the top may be decanted and stored for use.
