GIVEN

Baker Hazel is making several cakes for a big party. She uses ¼ cup of butter for each cake she makes. She has a big tub that has 6 cups of butter in it. She needs to save 1 ½ cups of butter to make frosting later

TO DETERMINE

The number of cakes Baker Hazel can make using the butter she has left

CALCULATION

Let P be the number of cakes can Baker Hazel can make using the butter she has left

Now At the beginning Baker Hazel has 6 cups of butter

Now for frosting later she has to save

 \displaystyle \sf{1 \frac{1}{2} \:   \:cups \: of \: butter }

So Baker Hazel can use

 \displaystyle \sf{6 - 1 \frac{1}{2} = 6 -  \frac{3}{2}  \:  =  \frac{9}{2}   \:cups \: of \: butter }

 \displaystyle \sf{Now \:  each \:  cup \:she \:   requires  \:  \: \frac{1}{4} \:   \:cups \: of \: butter }

 \displaystyle \sf{ So  \: For \:  P \:  cakes  \: she \:  requires \:  \: \frac{P}{4} \:   \:cups \: of \: butter }

Hence by the given condition

 \displaystyle \sf{   \frac{ P}{4} \:  = \: \frac{9}{2} \:   \:}

  \implies \: \displaystyle \sf{  P  \:  = \: \frac{9}{2} \times 4 \:   \:}

  \implies \: \displaystyle \sf{  P  \:  = \: 18  \:}

Hence Baker Hazel can make 18 cakes using the butter she has left

 Total \:Quantity \: of\: butter = 6 \:cups

 Required \: butter \: to \:make

 frosting \: later = 1\frac{1}{2} \:cup

 Remaining \: butter\: left = 6 - 1\frac{1}{2}

 = 6 - 1.5

 = 4.5 \: cups

 Required \: butter \: to \:make

 each \:cake = \frac{1}{4} \:cup

 Let \: number \:of \:cakes \: made

\: by \: remaining \: butter = n

 n \times \frac{1}{4} = 4.5

 \implies n = 4.5 \times \frac{4}{1}

 \implies n = 18

Therefore ,

 \red{ number \:of \:cakes \: made }

\red{by \: remaining \: butter}\green { = 18}
