Baking power contains baking soda (Na HCO3, sodium bicarbonate) and some other acidic salt compounds or mild acids. The acidic compounds can be phosphate or sulphate of sodium of calcium or other metals.

The commercial baking powders and domestic one differ in composition.  Ultimately the purpose is same.

vlad: baing powder contains nahco3 and tartaric acid (tartaric acid is used to nuetralise the bitter taste of nahco3 otherwise bakery items will taste bitter)
