Because it contain Sodium bicarbonate which react with air to for Carbon dioxide which extinguished fire.. co2 is extinguisher

Baking soda is used as soda acid fire extinguisher because it releases carbon dioxide which hinder the combustion and cut off the supply of oxygen and stops combustion.
