In 1897 Balgangadhar Tilak was named as Lokmanya Tilak.
This happened during the period of time when plague spread in Pune and Bombay.
He was the one who wrote articles taking up the peoples cause and he was sentenced to imprisonment for about 18 months.
This sentence and charge made his earn this title called ’Lokmanya’ which means the leader of our nation.
