Amphoteric oxide: Metal oxides which react with both acids and bases to form salt and water. (Neutralization reaction)

Aluminium oxide and Zinc oxide are examples of amphoteric oxides.

Reaction of Amphoteric oxides with acids:

1. Al₂O₃ + HCl → AlCl₃ + H₂O

Balanced equation:

Al₂O₃ + 6HCl → 2AlCl₃ + 3H₂O

2. Al₂O₃ + H₂SO → Al₂(SO₄)₃ + H₂O

Balanced equation:

Al₂O₃ + 3H₂SO → Al₂(SO₄)₃ + 3H₂O

Reaction of Amphoteric oxides with bases:

1. ZnO  + NaOH → Na₂ZnO₂ + H₂O

Balanced equation:

ZnO  + 2NaOH → Na₂ZnO₂ + H₂O

2. Al₂O₃ + NaOH → NaAlO₂ + H2O

Balanced equation:

Al₂O₃ + 2NaOH → NaAlO₂ + H2O
