Zinc does not react directly with water. The surface of the metallic zinc reacts with the oxygen of the air (O2) in presence of water (H2O), to form zinc hydroxide (Zn (OH) 2). Zinc hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide (CO2) present in the air to form zinc hydroxycarbonate (2ZnCO3).
