•Here we have to balance

P + HNO3 -----> H3PO4 +NO2 + H2O

In left hand side ,the oxidation number of P is 0

and in right hand side, the oxidation number of P is +5

Thus, In left hand side,the oxidation number of N is +5 and In right hand side , the oxidation number of N is +4

and

P(0) - 5e——› P(+5)

N(+5) +e ——› N(+4)

now

P(0) - 5e——› P(+5 × 1)

N(+5) +5e ——› N(+4 × 5)

so

P(0) - 5e = P(+5) ....(1)

N(+5) +5e = 5N(+4) .....(2)

by addition of (1) & (2) is

P(0)+5N(+5) = P(+5) + 5N(+4)

The balance would be

P+ 5HNO3 = H3PO3 + 5NO2 + H2O
