Balance Portfolio: Symmetry
A young man named Adam Smith just finished writing his first book. The troubled teenager’s autobiography is called A Look Into Me. Smith hopes his story will touch the lives of teenagers everywhere. For this activity, you will design a book cover for Adam Smith’s new book. Using Inkscape, create three separate designs: one using horizontal symmetry, one using vertical symmetry, and one using perfect symmetry. Be sure to define the purpose(s) of the design and consider your audience when creating your compositions. This activity will be submitted as part of the portfolio for this lesson.
Balance Portfolio: Asymmetry
For this activity, you will create a fourth design for the book cover for Adam Smith's new book, A Look Into Me. This design should have asymmetrical balance. This activity will be submitted as part of your portfolio for this lesson.
Balance Portfolio: Real Examples
Look through magazines, billboards, and other visual designs to find examples of symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial balance. Find at least one example of each type of balance. Scan each design or take a picture of the design with a digital camera and save the pictures. If you don’t have access to a scanner or digital camera, save the examples or make copies of them and keep them for later use. This activity will be submitted as part of your portfolio for this lesson.
