Answer:

Bi + 3NO₃⁻ + 6H⁺ → Bi⁺³ + 3NO₂ + 3H₂O

Explanation:

Bi + NO₃⁻ → Bi⁺³ + NO₂ + H₂O

Here, oxidation state of Bismuth changes from 0 to +3. So, Bismuth is undergoing oxidation.

Also, oxidation state of Nitrogen changes from +5 to +4. So, Nitrogen is undergoing reduction.

Hence, it is a Redox reaction.

When Bi → Bi⁺³ , 3 electrons are lost.

Also, when N⁺⁵ → N⁺⁴ , 1 electron is gained.

But, number of electrons transfered during the reaction must be same i.e., number of electrons gained should be equal to number of electrons lost.

⇒ When 3Ni⁺⁵ → 3Ni⁺⁴ , 3 electrons are gained.

⇒ Bi + 3NO₃⁻ → Bi⁺³ + 3NO₂ + H₂O

Now, total charge in reactant side is -9 and total charge in product charge is +3.

So, to balance the charge on both side, add sufficient number of H⁺ ions on either side.

⇒ Bi + 3NO₃⁻ + 6H⁺ → Bi⁺³ + 3NO₂ + H₂O

Now, total number of Hydrogens in reactant side is 6 and total number of Hydrogens on product side is 2

So, to balance number of Hydrogens on both side, add sufficient number of H₂O molecules on either side.

⇒ Bi + 3NO₃⁻ + 6H⁺ → Bi⁺³ + 3NO₂ + H₂O + 2H₂O

⇒ Bi + 3NO₃⁻ + 6H⁺ → Bi⁺³ + 3NO₂ + 3H₂O
