We have to balance the equation :

MnO₄¯ + C₂H₅OH ⇒Mn²⁺ + CH₃COOH

solution : here Mn of MnO₄¯ is reduced from +7 to +2 oxidation state while C of C₂H₅OH is oxidised from -2 to 0 oxidation state.

step 1 : MnO₄¯ ⇔ Mn²⁺

adding 4H₂O in right side of equation and then adding 8H⁺ to the left side of it.

i.e., MnO₄¯ + 8H⁺ ⇔ Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O

Balancing ions, we have to add 5e¯ in left side.

so, MnO₄¯ + 8H⁺ + 5e¯ ⇔ Mn²⁺ + 4H₂O .......(1)

step 2 : C₂H₅OH ⇔CH₃COOH

balancing Oxygen, add H₂O in left side.

i.e., C₂H₅OH + H₂O⇔CH₃COOH

balancing hydrogen, add 4H⁺ in right side,

C₂H₅OH + H₂O⇔CH₃COOH + 4H⁺

balancing ions, add 4e¯ into right side,

i.e., C₂H₅OH + H₂O⇔CH₃COOH + 4H⁺ + 4e¯ ......(2)

from equations (1) and (2), we have to eliminate e¯

multiply 4 with eq (1) and 5 with eq (2) and then add both of them we get,

4MnO₄¯ + 12H⁺ + 5C₂H₅OH ⇒4Mn²⁺ + 11H₂O + 5CH₃COOH , this is balanced chemical equation.
