The sulphur dioxide ( so2 ) gas is oxidixed to sulfur trioxide ( so3 ) , only when so2 comes in contact with the surface of catalyst know as vanadium pentoxide ( v3o5 ) , in presence of 2 - 3 atmospheric pressure 450 - 500 degrees Celsius temperature .

The required chemical equations is

2SO2 + O2 = 2SO3
