We are asked to balance the following chemical equations:

a. {\sf{Mg + H_2SO_4 = MgSO_4 + H_2}}

b. {\sf{CaCO_3 + HCl = CaCl_2 + H_2O + CO_2}}

c. {\sf{Ag + HNO_3 = AgNO_3 + H_2O + NO_2}}

Let us balance these equations!

a. {\sf{Mg + H_2SO_4 = MgSO_4 + H_2}}

\begin{gathered}\boxed{\begin{array}{c|cc}\bf Reactants &\bf Products \\\frac{\quad \quad \quad\quad\quad \quad\quad\quad}{}&\frac{\quad \quad \quad\quad\quad \quad\quad\quad}{}\\\sf Mg = 1 & \sf Mg = 1 \\ \\ \sf H = 2 & \sf H = 2 \\ \\ \sf S = 1 & \sf S = 1 \\ \\ \sf O = 4 & \sf O = 4 \end{array}}\end{gathered}

This equation is already balanced!

  • {\small{\boxed{\boxed{\bf{Mg + H_2SO_4 = MgSO_4 + H_2}}}}}

b. {\sf{CaCO_3 + HCl = CaCl_2 + H_2O + CO_2}}

\begin{gathered}\boxed{\begin{array}{c|cc}\bf Reactants &\bf Products \\\frac{\quad \quad \quad\quad\quad \quad\quad\quad}{}&\frac{\quad \quad \quad\quad\quad \quad\quad\quad}{}\\\sf Ca = 1 & \sf Ca = 1 \\ \\ \sf C = 1 & \sf C = 1 \\ \\ \sf O = 3 & \sf O = 3 \\ \\ \sf H = 1 & \sf H = 2 \\ \\ \sf Cl = 1 & \sf Cl = 2 \end{array}}\end{gathered}

• Here, H is 1 and 2 as reactants and products respectively. So there is a need to balance it!

• Also here Cl is 1 and 2 as reactants and products respectively. So there is a need to balance it too!

Step. Let us multiply 2 with 1 for Cl I'm reactants.

{\sf{:\implies CaCO_3 + HCl = CaCl_2 + H_2O + CO_2}}

{\sf{:\implies CaCO_3 + 2HCl = CaCl_2 + H_2O + CO_2}}

Now this eqⁿ is balanced!

  • {\small{\boxed{\boxed{\bf{CaCO_3 + 2HCl = CaCl_2 + H_2O + CO_2}}}}}

c. {\sf{Ag + HNO_3 = AgNO_3 + H_2O + NO_2}}

\begin{gathered}\boxed{\begin{array}{c|cc}\bf Reactants &\bf Products \\\frac{\quad \quad \quad\quad\quad \quad\quad\quad}{}&\frac{\quad \quad \quad\quad\quad \quad\quad\quad}{}\\\sf Ag = 1 & \sf Ag = 1 \\ \\ \sf H = 1 & \sf H = 2 \\ \\ \sf N = 1 & \sf N = 2 \\ \\ \sf O = 3 & \sf O = 6 \end{array}}\end{gathered}

• Here, H is 1 and 2 as reactants and products respectively. So there is a need to balance it!

• Also here N is 1 and 2 as reactants and products respectively. So there is a need to balance it!

• Here O is 3 and 6 as reactants and products respectively. So there is a need to balance it too!

Step. Multiply 2 with H in reactants to make it balanced.

{\sf{:\implies Ag + HNO_3 = AgNO_3 + H_2O + NO_2}}

{\sf{:\implies Ag + 2HNO_3 = AgNO_3 + H_2O + NO_2}}

Now it is balanced!

  • {\small{\boxed{\boxed{\bf{Ag + 2HNO_3 = AgNO_3 + H_2O + NO_2}}}}}
