Given :-

  • A uniform metre scale is balanced at 40cm mark, when weights of 25gf and 10gf are suspended at 5cm and 75cm mark respectively.

To Find :-

  • The weight of the metre scale ?

Solution :-

Given that, metre scale is uniform .

So,

weight acts at = 50 cm mark.

Now,

→ Moment in clockwise direction = (w *10cm + 5gf *35cm). = (10w cm + 175gf cm.)

And,

→ Moment in antidockwuse direction = 20 gf * 35 cm = 700gf cm.

Now, we know that the law of moments say that :-

  • When an object is balanced , the sum of the clockwise moments is equal to the sum of the anticlockwise moments.

Therefore,

→ Moment in clockwise direction = Moment in anticlockwise direction .

→ (10w cm + 175gf cm) = 700gf cm.

→ 10w cm = 700gf cm - 175gf cm.

→ 10w cm = 525gf cm.

dividing both sides by 10,

→ w = 52.5 gf . (Ans.)

Hence, weight of metre scale is 52.5 gf.
