An equation is said to be balanced when the number of atoms of reactants is equal as the number of atoms of products.

example:

2Mg + O2 → 2MgO

reactants: 2 atoms of mg
2 atoms of oxygen

Products: 2 atoms of mg
2 atoms of oxygen
