In the oxidation number changemethod the underlying principle is that the gain in the oxidation number (number of electrons) in one reactant must be equal to the loss in the oxidation number of the other reactant.

Here, magnesium is getting oxidised

Before balancing-

Mg +O2 ---> MgO

(Note :oxygen is a gas so it is foung in molecular state so it it O2)


After balancing-

2Mg + O2 ---> 2MgO


(Note :here, this reaction is an oxidation reaction as well as combination reaction)
