The Number of bananas were sold = 1200.

Step-by-step explanation:

∵Purchasing price of 100 bananas = 240  Rs.

∴ Purchasing price of 1 banana = \dfrac{240}{100}  = \dfrac{12}{5}  Rs.

Now, Selling price of a dozen (12) banana = 40  Rs.

∴ selling price of 1 banana = \dfrac{40}{12}  =  \dfrac{10}{3}   Rs.

So,  profit on selling 1 banana = selling price of 1 banana - Purchasing price of 1 banana

∴   profit on selling 1 banana = [\dfrac{10}{3}-\dfrac{12}{5}]  =  \dfrac{50-36}{15}  = \dfrac{14}{15}  Rs.

Now,  \dfrac{14}{15}  Rs. profit on selling no. of banana = 1

    ∴ 1120 Rs. profit on selling no. of bananas = \dfrac{1120\times15}{14}  = 1200.
