Bandipur National Park

Far from the crowd, nestling in the foothills of the Nilgiris, is the beautiful sanctuary of Bandipur. The Moyer River forms a natural boundary between the Mudumalain Wildlife Sanctuary in Tamilnadu and the Bandipur National Park in Karnataka. The park was formed by extending the Venugopal Wildlife Park which had been set up in 1931 by the Maharajas of Mysore. It covers an area of 874 kms at an altitude ranging from 780 to 1454 metres.

Covered with a mix of deciduous forests, evergreen forests and scrub, Bandipur has a fairly open forest area, which provides opportunities for visitors to spot the wildlife. The tigers, however, may prove elusive.

As you penetrate deep into the forests through the well laid-out roads, you can almost here the silent conversations between the animals and the trees. The flora and fauna here exist in perfect harmony.

The flora in the forest comprises of teak, rosewood, honne, mathi, bamboo and sandal trees. An endless variety of wildlife flourishes and the main fauna are the tiger, elephant, gaur, leopard, chital, wild dog, sloth bear and sambar. A wide variety of birds like the peafowl, partridge, quail, hornbill and ibis are also found here.

The Park is one of the fifteen Tiger Reserves in the country, launched under the Project Tiger scheme in 1973. It is committed to the preservation of the endangered tiger population and its habitat.

There is no local transport available. The Forest Department arranges for Wild Life viewing by jeep or van and elephants can be hired for rides around the Park. Wildlife viewing & elephant rides are normally arranged between 0600 to 0900 hrs. and 1630 to 1830 hrs. Visitors vehicles are also permitted into the Park if accompanied by trained guides on payment of prescribed fees

The temperature is moderate and ranges from a maximum of 29 degrees celsius to a minimum of 17 degrees.

The park is open throughout the year. The best season is March to July & September to November.

Bandipur forest in Karnataka is one of them. It also comes under Nilgiri Bioreserve project. It is also home to various endangered wildlife species. So you can hope to spot tiger in Bandipur forest, if you are lucky.

How to get there

By Road

It is approximately 230 kms from Bangalore on the Ooty highway. It takes around 5-6 hours from Bangalore by road. Bandipur is a perfect weekend getaway from Bangalore. Bandipur forest lies between Mysore and Ooty. So it attracts lost of tourists on the way to Ooty.

Climate

Bandipur has moderate climate all throughout the year but the best season is from October to May. This period is also suitable for animal spotting. This is the time animals move around freely and walk towards water source.

Where to stay

Bandipur boasts of several stay options of forest resorts/lodges across the forest area. It is good to do the stay bookings in advance, as it is generally crowded on the weekends.

Places of Interest

Bandipur forest safari

There is a Bandipur Forest safari which will take you inside the Bandipur national park for animal spotting. It’s a treat for the nature lovers to be inside dense green forest, looking around animals in their natural habitat. You can see elephants, bears, langurs, deers, antelopes, wild bulls and buffalos roaming around freely. Only if you are super lucky, you can spot the ‘big cat’

Must Do

On the way to Bandipur forest, a stop at Mysore is a must. You can spend a day in this ‘Palace city of India’. When in Mysore, Mysore palace and Brindavan gardens is a must visit. Mysore palace is truly marvellous. It looks beautiful in the yellow lights at night. A Brindavan garden is a delight to take a stroll by the beautiful fountains. Also when in Mysore, do shop for Mysore silk shawls and sarees.

Closure Line

Bandipur sees a lot of tourist traffic due to connectivity to Bangalore and Ooty by national highway. This road is a cause of concern for animal fatalities. Forest officials have given many warnings to the travelers and restricted the movement of vehicles between 9 p.m to 6 a.m. Bandipur forest is a well deserved weekend break in the wild.

So if you are visiting Mysore, or heading to Ooty, I would suggest a night break at Bandipur forest, just to rejuvenate by living in the wild. Cheers!!
