The eminent Bengali writer, poet, journalist and novelist Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay(who later composed Vande Mataram) is officially considered as the first Indian-born Indian-author, to have written and published a novella* in 1864 completely written in English. It is called Rajmohan’s Wife and was first published during the ertwhile British Raj in an English weekly periodical, the Indian Field.
A marvellous account of the household affairs in an erstwhile Indian patriarchal society; and the suffering of a 19th century Bengali woman and her inherent struggles trying to break out of the confines of middle-class society; made this novella famous.
Considered highly and revered amongst the Lirerary circles and praised even in London when the British looked down upon India as one of the rag-picker colonies of the British Empire; it is a fantastic read. You can purchase it here
