The term bark refers to the several layers of dermal tissue above the epidermis of a woody stem or root . it performs important functions . the dead tissue of the bark form a protective barrier from loss of water , mechanical damages and invasion of parasites and diseases causing organisms . thus we can interpret that bark cells are impervious to gases and water.
