The specific gravity of basalt will vary over a wide range; however because basalt is extruded from volcanos and cools rapidly and may contain gases or pores, its specific gravity should be less than granite which is formed by slow cooling and has large crystals and no pores. Large-crystal rocks generally have higher specific gravity than fine crystal or amorphic rocks.
