First, the rich become richer by investing their money in concerns that show the potential for growth and profit or providing products and or services that other people deem desirable. Second, the rich practice restraint in their non-investment purchases, in other words, they don't engage in impulse buying. Third, when they do purchase something they value quality over glitz. 

The poor are the largest users of “revolving credit", in other words they carry forward a balance on their credit cards accruing the associated interest charges. This alone can have a negative impact on their annual usable income by hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
