On the basis of temperature the globe is divided into three broad zones. They are:


Torrid Zone

This zone is also known as the Tropics. It extends from the Tropic of Cancer or 23.5 degrees North latitude to Tropic of Capricorn or 23.5 degrees South latitude. It covers 39.78% of the Earth's surface.


Temperate Zones

The North temperate zone - It extends from the Tropic of Cancer or 23.5 degrees North latitude to the Arctic Circle or 66.5 degrees North latitude. It covers 25.99% of the Earth's surface.

The South temperate zone - It extends from the Tropic of Capricorn or 23.5 degrees South latitude to the Antarctic Circle or 66.5 degrees South latitude. It covers 25.99% of the Earth's surface.


Frigid Zones

The North frigid zone - It extends from the Arctic Circle or 66.5 degrees North latitude to the North Pole or 90 degrees North latitude. It covers 4.12% of the Earth's surface.

The South frigid zone - It extends from the Antarctic Circle or 66.5 degrees South latitude to the South Pole or 90 degrees latitude. It covers 4.12% of the Earth's surface.
