I) M - 1st group element

O - oxygen

The valency of first group elements +1 whereas the valency of oxygen is -2 .

Thus the formula of oxides is M2 O.

II) M - 13th group element

X - halogen

The valency of group 13 elements is +3 and the valency of halogen is -1.

Thus the formula of the halides formed is MX3.

III) M - group 2 element

Y - group 16 element

The valency of the group 2 elements is +2 and the valency of group 16 elements is -2 .

Thus the formula of the compounds formed is MY.
