The actual answer is Yes. Annie is a northerner and Keller is a southerner. Captain Keller made several condescending comments towards Annie, for example, when he said "I have tried to make allowances for you because you come from a part of the country where people are- women, I should say- come from who..." It makes it sound as though he has lower expectations for Annie because she is a woman from the north.
