Shapes of H₂O and NH₃ using VSEPR theory
Explanation:
- VSEPR theory is used to determine shapes and geometries of molecules. To determine shape firstly determine hybridization.
- For H₂O, central atom is oxygen. Valence shell electrons on oxygen is 6. Oxygen is bonded with 2 hydrogen atoms. So, in H₂O, bond pair is 2 and lone pair is 2. Therefore, its hybridization is sp² and shape of H₂O is angular/V-shape/bent shape.
- For NH₃, central atom is nitrogen. Electron in outermost shell of nitrogen is 5. Nitrogen is bonded with 3 hydrogen atom. So, in NH₃, bond pair is 3 and lone pair is 1. Therefore, its hybridization is sp³ and shape of NH₃ is pyramidal.
