The writer and her son have a very amiable and jovial relationship. Being betrayed in marriage, and no other family member to be by her side, Maya Angelou, the writer, was left with nothing but her son. She could have decided to let the child die as she was out of marriage, but she gave him birth and made him her reason for living. Hence she raised him as her precious possession yet let him free to live his life independently. As evident from the mother-son experiences described in Ghana, they shared both good and bad times together being each other strength and support system.
