Bases dissolve in water to release OH - ions. If they do not dissolve to release OH- ions then they will not be called bases since that is a characteristic property of bases. But Alkalis are bases that dissolve in water. Then what is the difference between them? So do bases do not dissolve in water to release OH - ions? If both dissolve in water then what is the difference between them? Please answer of you know the answer or else write in the comments if you know.

Answer:

A base is an ionic compound that produces negative hydroxide ions when dissolved in water. Bases taste bitter and turn red litmus paper blue. The strength of acids and bases is determined by the concentration of ions they produce when dissolved in water.
