Explanation:

BaSO4 + 4C = BaS + 4CO

The reaction is balance.

BaSO4 + 4 C = BaS + 4CO

oxidation number of Ba = 2 (alkaline earth metal always have 2+ oxidation number from rules)

S = x

O = -2

+2 + x + 4(-2) = 0 ( since this is a neutral molecule)

+2 + x - 8 = 0

x - 6 = 0

x = +6

The Oxidation number of S = +6

4C = 0 ( since C is in its Natural State from rule)

BaS + 4CO

Oxidation number of Ba = +2

Oxidation number of S = x

+2 + x = 0

x = -2

Therefore, Oxidation number if S = -2

Oxidation number of C = x

Oxidation number of 0 = -2

4(x) + 4(-2) = 0

4x - 8 = 0

4x = 8

x = 8÷4

x = +2

Oxidation number of C = +2

Here, in S

Oxidation number decreases so

the reaction is reduction reaction.

Here, in C

Oxidation number increases, so the reaction is oxidation reaction.

And therefore, the above given reaction is Redox reaction.
