Marathas maintained a large kingdom owning to their strong and brave army. Besides a strong army, the military equipments of the Marathas were efficient.

The Marathas under Shivaji Mahahraj had a strong and well maintained navy as well. The strength of Maratha Navy was around 5,000 men and 57 warships. They had many strong battleships which include Galbat. The Galbats were larger row boats but of smaller dimensions. They carried only 'patteraroes' which were mounted with six or eight pieces of cannon ranging from two to four pounders.
