in the case of hot food the kinetic energy of the gases particles are so too high and so the intermolecular forces of attraction between the particles become less and less because the particles move apart with more force this increases the diffusion power of gases and this is the main reason why the smell of hot food travels father and rapidly.
in the case of cold foods in the kinetic energy of the gases particles are decreased which allows the intermolecular force of attraction to overcome the diffusion power of particles and the particles are brought closer to each other this is why the smell of cold food does not travel up to a father length and travels slowly as compared to hot food.
to conclude the particles of the hot food are more apart than the particles of the cold food.
the intermolecular force of attraction in the particles of hot food is very much more than the intermolecular force of attraction between the particles of cold food .
since the intermolecular force of attraction is much less in hot foods and the particles are more apart as compared to cold food so the gases over hot food occupy more volume than the gases over cold food.
