The fragrance of the incense stick does not reach us when it is not lit, as the molecules of the incense stick are closely bound to the stick and the diffusion of the fragrance is very less. However on burning the incense stick the fragrant molecules come in the vapour phase and are diffused in the surrounding , thus we are able to smell the fragrance of the stick.☺️✌️

This is because when the incense stick is heated then the kinetic energy of particles increases due to the increase in heat and this causes the rate of diffusion to take place at a faster rate but when unlit the rate of diffusion is less since
1. Temperature is less and kinetic energy is less.
2. Rate of diffusion is faster in gases than in solids and liquids.
Since when we lit the incense stick it converts into gaseous state and rate of diffusion is faster in gases.
