Why does rajasthan receive scanty rainfall? There are multiple reasons behind Rajasthan receiving scanty rainfall.  Firstly the Arabian Sea Branch of South West  Monsoon that causes rains in Western and South-Western India runs parallel to the Aravalli range and thus hardly causes any rainfall as the winds do not get interrupted. In the southern Aravallis (near Mount Abu) the mountains have slight east-west span thus receiving good rains in this region.  the map above shows that the southern aravallis are much greener than the northern part due to slight east-west span that stops the Arabian branch of S-W monsoons causing rains in southern Rajasthan and northern Gujarat.  Secondly the Bengal of Bay branch has got little or no moisture left when it reaches Western India - the reason for relatively dry central India than eastern India, and whatever little moisture it has is stopped by the Aravallis, thus making the western part of Rajasthan a desert while the part to East of  Aravallis is also dry but still has some cultivation.  19.8k Views ·  Your feedback is private. Is this answer still relevant and up to date? make you fact correct only west and north rajsthan receives less rainfall  yes only these parts receives very less rainfall if you will see east and south rajasthan receives much higher rainfall than the whole of the state. so amend your facts and make it clear  3.7k Views ·  Bcos of its geographical location Rajasthan receives scanty rainfall. We know about the south western monsoon which is the main cause of rainfall in most parts of India. This south western monsoon comes from the south western part of India from the Arabian Sea and goes in the same direction and strikes the northeast mountains of India. Then its direction changes towards northwest and while it reaches Rajasthan it gets all its moisture off on the way. Whatever moisture it contains is drained in the eastern part of the aravalli range which is located in an opposite direction of these winds
