Before 2006, people were certain of the fact that there were nine planets in the solar system, from Mercury all the way to Pluto. However, in 2006, a team of scientists known as the International Astronomical Union (IAU) met in Prague, Czech Republic and made the decision that Pluto should not be considered a planet at all.Discovered in 1930 and named after the Roman god of death, Pluto was long considered to be the smallest planet in the solar system. Composed of ice and rock, Pluto is so small that its diameter is only half the width of the United States. It is so far from the Sun that it takes 6.5 hours for the Sun’s light to reach it, compared to a mere 8 minutes for Earth. Pluto’s distance from the Sun also makes it extremely cold; it can reach a minimum of -400 degrees Fahrenheit! The IAU scientists first tasked themselves with determining the definition of a planet. Before this discussion, the term “planet” was somewhat unclear. They determined that three main qualifications must be met by a planet. The first condition states that the object must be in orbit around the Sun, while the second condition states that the object must be large enough to be rounded by its own gravity. Pluto meets both of these conditions. However, it fails to meet the third condition, which requires the planet to “clean the neighborhood around its orbit.” In other words, there cannot be any objects of comparable size near its orbit. Pluto fails this condition due to Neptune’s influence upon Pluto’s orbit. These qualifications remain somewhat controversial, and there are some scientists arguing that this change was unnecessary. However, the team’s decisions established the qualifications which a true planet must meet. As a result, Pluto became classified as a dwarf planet instead.Name:-Sunny CurranPluto:The Former Planet:Mercury,Venus,Earth,Mars,Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus,Neptune. & Pluto
