Before independence the women the were the suppressed section of the society .They were given freedom in limited amount and were discouraged from going to school .There was discrimination in the workplace as the women found it difficult to find employment and respectable wages.Social practices such as sati and denying marriages of widows were dominant in most of the India .On seeing this situation and inability of women to actively fight for their rights because of weak financial and social status men like Raja Ram Mohan Roy came forward and fought for the rights of women.
