Points to Remember

- By the end of the 9th century,the Abbasid Empire broke up into small kingdoms which

were ruled by the Turks who earlier served in the armies of caliphs.

- Ghazni and Ghor were the two important empires established by the Turks.The two

important Turks were Mahmud Ghaznavi and Muhammad Ghori.

- Mahmud Ghaznavi

 Ascended the throne of Ghazni in 998 CE.

vInvaded India 17 times during 25 years (1001 CE to 1026 CE).

 Attacked Somnath temple during his 17th raid in 1025 CE.

 He was interested in wealth rather than setting up an empire in India.

 Resisted by two Rajput rulers Jaypala(1001CE) and then by his son Anandpala

(1008-9 CE) but both were defeated by him.

 Returned home in 1026.

Muhammad Ghori

 Became the Governor of Ghazni in 1173CE and merged it into Ghorid (Ghor)

empire.

 He was interested to expand his territories.

 Known as the founder of Turkish rule in India.

 In 1191CE, invaded the territories of Prithviraj Chauhan of Ajmer and fought two

important Battles of Tarain.

First Battle of Tarain- (1191 CE) Prithviraj Chauhan defeated Muhammad Ghori.

Second Battle of Tarain-(1192CE) Muhammad Ghori defeated and killed Prithviraj

Chauhan and captured other Rajput kingdoms.

 Before leaving for Ghazni,he appointed Qutbuddin Aibak,a Turkish slave as his

regional governor of Northern India who later established Delhi Sultanate in

India.
