Step-by-step explanation:

Given "Before lock down 1 kilogram of onion and 4 kilograms of potato together cost Rs. 220. Due to lock down, the prices of potato and onion increase by 50% and 10% respectively. If the total cost of both potato and onion now is Rs. 266, find the original cost per kg of each."

  • Let onion be o and potato be p
  • So we have the equation
  • O + 4P = 220
  • Now increase in price will be
  • O + 10 / 100(O) + 4 (P + 50/100 P) = 266
  • So we get
  • 11/10 O + 6P = 266
  • Now we get the equations as
  • O + 4P = 220
  • 11 / 10 O + 6P = 266
  • Multiply the first equation by 11/10 we get
  • 11/10 O + 22/5 P = 242
  • 11/10 O + 6P = 266
  • Subtracting we get
  • So – 8/5 P = - 24
  • Or P = 15
  • OR 4 p = 4 x 15 = Rs 60
  • So 4P = 4 x 15 = Rs 60
  • Also O + 4P = 220
  •         O + 4(15) = 220
  • Or O = 220 – 60
  • Or O = Rs 160

Therefore price of each per kg will be Rs 160 and Rs 15
