This is Wisconsin's fourth capitol building. The Wisconsin Territory was established in 1836 in Belmont in a building that briefly served as its first, temporary capitol. The cornerstone of Madison's first capitol was laid on July 4, 1837. It was replaced with a building that was finished in 1869.
