Being a significant invention of the 20" century, the computer has become the most important tool for the
21" century learner. The ability of the modern-day computer to digitize text, audio, video and more has
given it a pivotal role in virtually every sphere of human activity. Today computers are used as highly
versatile information retrieval, learning, communication, entertainment, business and networking tools.
Services such as e-mail, chatting, teleconferencing, video conferencing and, now, social networking
provide a two-way communication advantage over one-way information devices such as television,
radio, newspaper, magazines, and more. E-platforms like e-learning, e-commerce, e-banking, e-
governance, e-ticketing tools, and more have made computers an integral part of modern life.
Given this scenario, 21" century learners need to be proficient in the use of computers. Realizing this 21"
Century Educators have developed a unique computer learning series entitled CONNECT TO THE
COMPUTER WORLD. As the name suggests, this eight part series, for classes 1 to 8, strives to connect
the 21" century learner with the world of computers. The series is graded as per the latest NCERT
guidelines and is strictly in accordance with the syllabus prescribed by CBSE, ICSE and various State
Boards. The series gradually connects young learners to the world of computers through the latest
hardware and software technologies, with hugely popular WINDOWS 7 and MS OFFICE 2010 being at
its core.
The series explains the theoretical aspects conceptually and in a simple language. Practical learning is
facilitated through sections such as Steps, Activity, Lab Time, Activity Time and Projects within, after
chapters and at the end of the books. To facilitate revision, sections such as Lets Recall and Terms to Learn
have been added at the end of the chapters and National Cyber Olympiad at the end of the books from
class 3 onwards. Evaluation is facilitated through plentiful worksheets at the end of the chapters in the
form of Testing Time and at the end of the book through Assessment 1 and Assessment 2. Latest and evolving
trends, technologies and gaming trends in the field of computers have been integrated within the text, in
the form of Trendy Bytes and Play Time at the end of the chapters. The National Cyber Olympiad quiz, given
at the end of the book, aims at helping children prepare to participate in the National Cyber Olympiad
contest conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF).
The series strives to integrate learners with modern society by providing them with a myriad of useful
information available on the Internet and other digital media. The series is replete with photo-editing,
web-development and editing, animation and web browsing software to provide learners to pursue
creative ends.
21" Century Educators hope that the series will prove beneficial for learners as a self-learning resource.
The authors, further, hope that the series becomes a useful resource for educators to enliven the teaching
of computers, making it more relevant to current and future needs of learners. While all efforts have been
made to make the books effective any suggestions for improvements will be highly appreciated.
