Contemplative writing
In life I always believe in the adage, 'To cut one's coat according to one's cloth'. Life can be viewed as a bright luxurious dream and in order to pursue this dream we often turn it into a nightmare.
Dwelling in a utopian world is of no use.It always leads to dystopia. To be practical and worldly-wise can save us from many disasters. This is very humorously and ironically portrayed by the famous writer Somerset Maugham in his didactic short story 'The Luncheon'.
The narrator of the story, also bearing an autobiographical resemblance to the author himself, is an aspiring writer. He belongs to the middle class strata in society and can just make both ends meet.
He resides in Paris, as is the vogue for all . One of his lady fans wants to meet him and he takes her to an extremely sophisticated and posh restaurant for luncheon. He does so to show off his success and accomplishments.
Ironically, the lady has a sumptuous meal going far beyond the ' a la carte '. When the narrator has to foot the bill his entire months earning goes into it leaving him with nothing.
The story reflects that we should always live within our means. We should be practical and wise. It is totally foolish and futile to chase dreams that lead to ruin. So we have to learn to cut our coat according to our size only.
