Belinda tickled Custard because he was a cowardly dragon. He always cried for a safe cage, while Belinda and the other animals were much braver and fiercer than him. They found his cowardice amusing, and always ridiculed him for it. Hence, Belinda tickles him unmercifully, the other animals rudely call him Percival, and they all sit laughing at him in their little red wagon.
