Given : Ben Nevis has a height of approximately 1300 metres above sea level.  temperature decreases by 1 degree c for every 100 metres above sea level

To find : the temperature at the summit of ben nevis when the sea level temperature is 5degree c

Solution:

temperature decreases by 1 degree c for every 100 metres above sea level

for 100 m above sea level temperature Drop  = 1°C

=> for 1  m above sea level temperature Drop  = 1°/100 C

=> for x  m above sea level temperature Drop  = x°/100 C

Let say Temperature at sea  Level  =  c° deg

Than  Temperature above x m  height  =  c° -  x°/100

=> y = c° -  x°/100

=> y  =  -x/100  + c

Temperature at sea level = 5°C

=> y  = -x/100  + 5

x = 1300 m

=> y = -1300/100 + 5

=> y = -13 + 5

=> y = - 8

temperature at the summit of ben nevis = - 8°C when the sea level temperature is 5°C
