Benefits of desert plants having small leaves and only spines

Desert plants acquire many adaptations like small leaves, thick cuticle in order to avoid loss of water through transpiration (loss of water through stomata )

Conversion of leaves to spines works on the same principle ie, to avoid transpiration

Eg; opuntia , in this leaves r converted into spines and stem is converted into phyllode.
