No one is saying it should be FREE. Of course it can never be free because all the supplies, facilities and labor cost money. What is being suggested by many people is that they should be socialized, which means ran by the government and paid for with taxes. Arguments in favor are that it would be cheaper that way because profits are no longer a concern, and that it would be more fair and give access to the same quality healthcare and education for all citizens.
The arguments against socializing healthcare and higher education (K-12 is already socialized in the US) is that it removes freedom of choice, the quality might be lowered if there are no profits to be made and will make wealthier people pay more than their fair share. Another argument exists in the case of higher education, which is that university degrees will lose their value if they don’t cost any money.
There are many countries that have socialized healthcare and some that have socialized higher education if you want to look at case studies and see how it plays out in the real world. I don’t know of any countries that have these things and want to get rid of them, if that tells you anything.
