Solution -

Let us assume that the required number thought by Benny is X .

Now , first he subtracts 18 from it .

So , now the number Becomes -

=> ( X - 18 ) .

Now , this result is divided by 3 .

So , this becomes -

=> [ x - 18 ] / 3 .

But , this is equal to -4

So , we can say that -

[ x - 18 ] / 3 = -4

=> [ x - 18 ] = 3 × -4

=> x - 18 = - 12

=> x = 18 - 12

=> x = 6 .

Thus , the required number thought by Benny is 6 .

This is the required answer .

ANSWER

Let the number be x.

↱ (x - 18) / 3 = - 4

↱ x - 18 / 3 = - 4

↱ x - 18 = (- 4) × 3

↱ x - 18 = - 12

↱ x = - 12 + 18

↱ x= 6

\therefore The number is 6
